Oscar isn't a dirty fighter but shoeshining is a big part of his career and why he has had so many close and controversial fights. I didn't think the Sturm fight was controversial though, I thought Sturmk won clear

I thought he was just out of gas . Maybe he could have pulled one more round but then he would have had to run anyway.
He could have fought differently throughout the fight though to conserve more energy. He could have used his legs less in the first half of the fight.

There's no way ODLH won 7 rounds against Sturm so I laugh at anyone who really believes he won that fight. ODLH threw body punches that were for the most part blocked (except the first round because he threw so many damn punches). Anyways back to the point of this thread ODLH used up a lot of energy in just winning 1 round then got outboxed.

    He was landing though.

What surprised me about that fight was how many punches he could throw even though he was fat and clearly out of shape.
It almost seemed he could throw more then when he was in shape. :dunno:

Like I said , I thought he lost.

I just think some people are giving more credit to sturum because his punches that connected were more visable to the eye.
DLH landed some nice body punches. At times he landed 4 and 5 in a row.
Then Sturum would clealy pop his head back with a jab or something.
IMO its all how people see the fight. Some might see the body combination as being better , others might cling to the fact Oscars head got popped back rather hard and consider that better. :dunno:

To me it was a closer fight then some people describe.

I remember watching the Tua-Lewis fight, listening to his corner tell Tua "you have to establish the jab!" Tua NEVER had a jab, and to tell a five foot nothing fighter to jab a 6'5" fighter was just stupid. I remember thinking I can't believe what they are telling him. Larry Merchant even talked shit about the corner for that advice.

The Forrest/Mayorga fights were the same. Forrest is such a better fighter than mayorga but he fought like a fucking moron scared to death.

it's always a huge deal when ODH gets hit, or is made to miss. it can happen once in a fight and people will declare it the story of the fight.

like some will offer as evidence that whitaker beat ODH the fact that he made him miss three punches in a row.

or some will say that ODH/Gatti was close because Gatti got a few licks in.

or that the final round of ODH/Quartey wasn't 10-8 because after knocking Quartey down and then beating him for 30 seconds in the corner, he took the rest of the round off.

it's just the way people do ODH.

the final round vs quartey wasnt 10-7 for the reason you illustrated. delahoya gatti was not close, but delahoya looked like shit that night vs an overmatched punching bag.

    10-7 ? :dunno:

    He said 10/8

It was a 10/8 round because Ike tasted canvas and then took a beating.
When Oscar backed off , Ike did nothing but plod forward without doing nothing of substance.

Not sure what you mean. It was absolutely a clear 10-8 round for DLH.

he's saying that the argument is against the idea that it was 10-7 - that nobody claims it wasn't a 10-8 round. i'm not so sure about that.

but if it's between it being a 10-9 round or a 10-7 round, it was definitely 10-7. but i think 10-8 is probably right. although you could argue that between the knock-down and the rag-doll imitation on the ropes, Quartey was legitimately down twice.

how exactly did he look like shit? it wasn't his prettiest performance but he wasted no time beating the hell out of Gatti and then stopping him.

what i find hilarious is that Gatti, for ODH, was a come-backing tune-up fight after his loss to Mosley, a stay-busy fight. but it's damn near a crowning achievement for PBF.

I had the fight even going into the 12th (I forget what round I had even)
The 12th round 10/8 for Hoya IMO sealed his victory (Ike's second KD)
I can't see how anyone could have had Ike up by 3 or 4 points going into the 12th and have Ike winning the overall fight.
To me that is insane scoring.

Yeah , go figure. Gatti was DLH's warm up fight. Not to mention he stopped a MUCH MORE younger prime Gatti even faster.

according to who? gatti wasnt an impressive win for either guy. delahoya looked like shit because he got hit way too much vs an over matched punching bag. the fight was competitive at times, which was a joke.

then again gatti was really the one on the comeback when he fought delahoya, considering he hadnt had a signifigant victory in how many fights/years? since he came back to beat gabe ruelas like 5 years earlier?

 much more younger? he stopped a guy who has never won a meaningful fight at welterweight in his life. this was back around the time of the las vegas/top rank scales fiasco as well. i wonder if delahoya really made 147lbs. not much different of a size mismatch than gatti gamache.

anyhow, gatti wasnt any better or worse when he fought delahoya. garbage win for mayweather, garbage win for delahoya. in the grand scheme of their careers. Im sure if you rank their greatest wins, gatti wouldnt rank highly among either.

I see your point but , nomatter how you slice and dice it , its clear that the younger , fresher version of Gatti was simply a better stronger fighter then the IV taking Gatti we seen Mayweather fight.

And again , at no time was the Gatti/DLH fight competetive.

well considering gatti was fighting in the weight class he has had the most sucess at in his entire career vs mayweather, and coming off a string of 3 or 4 of the better wins of his career, Id say that version was better than the welterweight coming off stunning KOs over Gamache and Marty Jacubowskis brother.

    Are you on crack ?

Gatti was younger , faster , less shop worn , simply all around in better condition for hand to hand combat.
There is no fucking way around that no-matter what you say.
No-one with common sense is can arguably sit here and look at someone like Gatti and the career he has had and state he was better fit for boxing when he was older at the tail end of his career then when he fought DLH.
    Its an impossibility.
Lets pull Micky Ward out of retirement and tell everyone he is at his best compared to 10 years ago.
Gatti couldn't even barely make 140 for PBF and had an IV in his arm right after they weighed in. The guy looked old and sick.
Obviously this was an issue because he never fought at 140 again.
And his fights after were a disaster.

Depends on your definition of competitive. At no time did I think Gatti was going to win. However, he certainly landed some decent punches against ODLH. Floyd beat Gatti more impressively than ODLH, and at a weight that Gatti had more success in.

You can't sit here and use that 140 shit as some success story for Gatti.
It was clear that 140 Vs PBF was hurting him more then it was helping him.
The guy had to use IV to rehydrate and never fought at 140 again.
So really enough of this 140 crap . Yeah , 140 was a good weight for Gatti but not at the point in time PBF fought him.

Gatti was coming off a much better patch of his career coming into the PBF fight than the ODLH fight so sure I can use that. Gatti had MUCH more success at 140 than 147, where he never did anything at all. It's not even an opinion, it's a fact.

You must hold a lot of stock in old shop worn fighters at the tail end of their careers who can't make weight normally.

Maybe DLH should drop back to 140. Maybe Mosely should go back to 135.

 So , that is meanigless. He caught Dorin with a body shot.
He might have done the same years before as well.

You think after we hydrated Mosely back from a 135 weigh in , he would be fit to fight for 12 rounds ? Think he would take shots well ?

i understand that mayweather is fighting a mega fight against ricky hatton, and delahoya is preparing for another 'comeback' fight.

exactly, I'm not even sure why it's a debate.

The only thing you can argue is that Gatti wasn't as used up in 2001 as he was in 2005. Still, he and his team went into the DLH fight believing it was a farewell cashout bout, as Arturo didn't have any serious intentions of returning after that.

Then of course, he found religion, found Buddy, yadda yadda, and "came back strong" in 2002 - going 2-1 against Terronn Millett and Micky Ward

There's no question he was shot heading into the Floyd fight. But he was already on the downside in 2001. 2002-2005 was merely prolonging the inevitable. All it took was an upgrade in class to show where he was really at.
