I thought of Shane Mosley as soon as I saw the title of this thread. I don't recall Tito ever being P4P #1.

I don't get why folks are entirely dismissing the notion that the fight would have been more competitive if Toney was in shape. I don't think Toney would ever beat Jones, but it's certainly not a stretch to assume to a better conditioned Toney would put in a better performance.

I'm not even sure a prime Jones has less defensive skills than Floyd. There were instances where he let guys come at him on the ropes with his guard up and never got hit only to sometimes stick his head out and smile at the other guy. THen when he was ready he just jumped into attack mode and beat the shit out of him. Reference the Sosa fight. It looked like toying most of the times. Today when he's on the ropes he gets hit a lot, though...

Fine, have it YOUR Way Burger King:lol:....

    But Respectfully Consider The Following...

Whittaker vs. Roger Mayweather...The SAME Roger Mayweather that DROPPED Sweet Pea AND had him AS HURT as Anybody Managed to Hurt him, his ENTIRE Career...Instead of Pointing Out the FACT that Mayweather ALREADY had 4 Losses in his Career (3 by KO), AND was Fighting a Young, OLYMPIC LION like Whittaker, REED Simply Views it as "Whittaker BEAT Mayweather"...No MORE, No LESS, No Back Story...

It'd Be VERY Easy for REED to Talk about "Best Weight Class", AGE, WEAR & TEAR, or Whatever Else, yet he Doesn't...Nonetheless, YOU Insist Upon Hanging a NOTORIOUSLY UNDISCIPLINED Fighter like James Toney, Over Roy Jones' Head, as Being "Out of Shape" that Night???...

    OK...

Greg Haugen (Arguably Whittaker's SIGNATURE Performance), who was NEVER Renown for his DISCIPLINE Either, had ALREADY Fought 30 Taxing, EMOTIONAL Rounds w/Vinny Paz, PRIOR to Getting Schooled by Sweet Pea....

Jose Luis Ramirez was Another Noteworthy Win...Nonetheless, he'd ALREADY Lost to "Boom Boom" Mancini & was SCHOOLED by Camacho Sr, PRIOR to Pernell Following Suit...How MUCH did Ramirez Have Left by the Time he Fought Whittaker???...Azumah Nelson Made his Mark @ 126 & 135...

See How This Works???...Even w/Pernell Whittaker, you Can Take his BEST Wins @ his BEST Weight & Cast a NEGATIVE Light Upon It..."____ Wasn't In Shape..." He was Tooo THIS....He Was Toooooo THAT...

Guys Stand in Line to NITPICK Roy Jones' Resume, yet FAIL To Do Likewise w/THEIR Favorite Fighters...Especially Duran Fans...They're the WORST...To Hear THEM Tell it, he's Basically UNDEfuckingFEATED...

REED...are you saying circumstances don't matter at all when discussing a fight? What about Tyson vs. Douglas?? I've never seen anyone reference that fight without making note of Tyson's physical and/or emotional issues.

REED's Problem is, Boxing Fans are SELECTIVE about Which Circumstances MATTER & Which 1's Don't...& it Usually Boils Down to Which Fighters they LIKE or DISLIKE...

So Even Though James Toney was "In Shape" For Roughly 1% of the Fights in his Career, it's OK to Diminish Roy's Win Over Him on that Basis???....

To me, it's impossible to properly judge a fight's merits without having a handle on the context of the fight when it actually happen. Otherwise we're just a bunch of BoxRec warriors that are more concerned with the names on the resume than anything else.

That being said, to me Jones - Toney clearly falls in the "big win" category for Jones. But there is definitely a bit of "shame on Toney" for not being in the best shape possible for what was the biggest fight of his career. I do think it wouldn't have changed the end result if Toney was in better shape...Jones still wins by a comfortable margin.

The Duran never was 'defeated'. He fell in holy sacrifice for our sins that he might rise again. amen.

REED, are you seriously saying that Toney was in the same shape against Jones that he was against, say, Iran Barkley or Prince Charles Williams?
