Alot of it is about being RELAXED. Oscar was never relaxed in the ring. He always seemed uptight in the ring and exerted himself alot. Compare him to guys like Duran and Mayweather and there is a big difference. Mayweather for his part is always relaxed and expels little if any energy. Duran had a high workrate but the way he threw punches was effortless and without any tension. Oscar always seemed to have alot of nervous energy in the ring. Jermain Taylor was the same way. Always uptight, always excerting himself. But in truth, some guys just have a good engine, if you will. Oscar did almost always look in top shape but he rarely finished strong in his biggest fights.
I definitely agree with that. Obviously burning nervous energy is a massive part of it, but imo only 50% or so. You do sometimes get fighters that are more on the tense side and still have better stamina than Oscar, and likewise you get relaxed fighters that don't even approach Duran levels of stamina. 50% of it is simply that some fighters have a bigger gas capacity than others.
Well, half right. Some people simply have bigger tanks than others. For example I'm sure Oscar wouldn't be burning nervous energy on a long distance run would he? He'd be as relaxed as Duran, but I'd bet money Duran would be able to run twice as long as Oscar.
And honestly, it's more like 90% right. Take James Toney... he would probably box 50 rounds, but he's not outrunning any of these guys. It's all about relaxation in the ring.
